Alternatively.. Aussie or worldwide audience? Aussie, I'd go a micro instance with Ninefold. Worldwide, I'd previously have recommended a $20/mo with linode (as they'll host DNS, too), but their recent downtime made me shift my small rails site to an EC2 micro instance at approximately the same price. All of these solutions assume more than a passing familiarity with setting up a production Rails server. If that's not the case, I'd probably stick with heroku or another SaaS solution.
