I've had my blog on wordpress.com for years, and I'm looking for better
blogging software - recommendations?

A "Better" blog for me:

* handles code (automatically does syntax highlighting) and text well. Ruby
code of course, but also Shell, Python, Clojure, whatever

* can use a lightweight markup language like Markdown instead of <shudder>
html. Wordpress can do this, but I don't know about previous point

* (harder) can do "callouts" from code listings. You might have seen callouts
in some of the NoStarch books - they're the little numbers in circles in code
listings, that look like copyright symbols or @'s, so you can refer to points
in a code listing from your text.

A bit off topic I know, but I thought any answers that come up would interest
other Ruby bloggers...
