This mission is pursued through education, research in the social and natural sciences, and the establishment of cooperative partnerships with businesses, governments, and local peoples to protect the environment, wildlife, workers and local communities. SmartWood (SW) is a program of the Rainforest Alliance created in 1989; it is the oldest forestry certification program in the world and has been accredited by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). SmartWood’s mission is to promote the implementation of sustainable forestry worldwide. To accomplish this, SmartWood provides forest management and chain of custody certification services in conjunction with RA’s TREES initiative, which provides training, research, education and policy work on sustainable forestry and certification worldwide. SW’s regional experts work with local communities and collaborate with an international network of regionally based conservation organizations. Summary of Position: The Asia-Pacific Forester will be responsible for providing certification services to support the sale and the development of the market for SmartWood certification services to clients. S/he will provide customer service to already existing and potential clients in the target region and facilitate training courses for regional specialists in forest assessments, chain-of-custody assessments and audits. The Asia-Pacific Forester will report to the SW Asia-Pacific Regional Manager. Responsibilities: Conduct scopings, field forestry and chain-of-custody certification assessments and audits; Write and review certification assessment and audit reports for the region; Serve as lead assessor on forest management and chain of custody scopings, assessments and audits; Assist the Regional Manager with related project management functions to include job budgeting, service contracts, team identification and contracts, arranging logistical support to consultants, report review, liaison with clients in assessment and report review, peer review identification and contracts; Guarantee the implementation of SW technical and administration certification protocols in the region in jobs directly under his/her responsibility; Provide customer service to current and interested clients in the region with information about certification, market linkages, guidance on certification process, marketing, etc.; As requested by the Regional Manager, implement direct first response to false claims in the region in coordination with the SmartWood headquarters office (SWHQ); Work with the Regional Manager to develop and meet international sales and business targets for the region and related market linkages outside the region; Directly market SW certification to potential community & commercial forestry and wood products industry clients and direct international certification markets leads not included in the region to SWHQ; Recruit clients for other SW services (rediscovered wood, etc.); Provide input from the region in SW policy development and technical improvements to the certification system; Assist in the organization and facilitation of training courses for regional specialists in forest assessment, chain-of-custody assessment and audits, and SmartWood administration requirements; Assist SW in identifying new alliances, develop SW network capacity with local NGOs and other stakeholders and recruit clients for other SW services (i.e. rediscovered wood, etc); and Support and/or conduct special projects and other tasks as requested. Qualifications: BS or BA degree in forestry or forest industries, ecology, or natural resource management; preferred MS or MA degree in forestry or forest industries, ecology, or natural resource management; 3-5 years of field experience in forestry or rural natural resources management and/or economic development; Knowledge of SmartWood FSC certification protocols, a plus; Project management skills (e.g. planning, management, evaluation) and attention to details; Experience in marketing and sales; Strong verbal and written communication skills in English language; Asian language capability in either Chinese, Japanese, or Malay-based language; Strong organizational management and development skills; Strong computer skills (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets and presentations); and Strong analytical skills to respond to multi-environment & multicultural situations. Summary of Position: The SmartWood Technical Specialist is responsible for providing technical leadership and quality control for forest management and chain of custody certification work worldwide. S/he will provide guidance, training and management support including technical assistance and troubleshooting for SW certification activities in coordination with the regional managers and partners. The technical specialist will conduct periodic field assessments and audits, be responsible for reviews and decisions for all certifications from partners and responsible for planning and implementing special projects funded by third parties. Responsibilities: Provide technical support and policy guidance for certification related work to SW regional managers and partners worldwide; resolve any technical issues that may emerge during an evaluation to ensure the durability of SW certification; Monitor and evaluate SW certification processes and reports for quality control to improve certification design and processes in fieldwork; Maintain and update SW certification systems in coordination with Certification Systems Manager to improve system efficiency, effectiveness and credibility; Provide training for SW staff and partners on system improvements; Facilitate information exchange between regions in terms of technical experience and examples; and Review and approve all certification assessments and audit reports from SW partners and regional managers, as required; Participate in efforts to recruit clients and maintain current clients; Participate in fieldwork serving on certification assessment and audit teams, with emphasis on training staff and new consultants as needed; Develop and implement specific technical assistance projects in coordination with TREES Director and/or others as appropriate; and Other duties as assigned by Certification Quality & Systems Manager. Qualifications: M.S. degree in forestry or natural resource related field; Minimum 5 years of field experience in forestry, rural natural resources management and/or economic development with international experience, FSC knowledge preferred; Spanish, Portuguese or French language functional fluency (FSI 3 or above); Strong verbal and written communication skills; experience in writing and editing technical documents a plus; Strong word processing, spreadsheet and computer skills; Program/project management skills (e.g. planning, management, evaluation) and attention to details; Strong analytical skills to respond to multi-cultural situations; and Ability to travel a minimum of 25% of the time.
