The state-of-the-art campus will be built on more than 36 million square meters on the Red Sea Coast near the city of Rabigh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. KAUST will create and support the highest standards of scholarship through merit-based opportunities for men and women from around the world. *When will KAUST open its doors to students?* KAUST is currently establishing academic and research agreements as well as scholarship programs. The first cohort of KAUST graduate students will matriculate in September 2009. *What are the core principles of KAUST?* As an independent university governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees and supported by a multi-billion dollar endowment, KAUST will convene the best minds - based strictly on merit - and create a collaborative community of passionate and talented researchers from around the world, who can transcend the boundaries of their fields to transform the lives of millions of others who will benefit from their work. The scholarship is designed to attract highly talented students from Saudi Arabia and around the world who are qualified and eligible to enroll in KAUST. In 2007 and 2008, KAUST will offer a pre-enrollment version of this general scholarship program to students attending undergraduate universities. Upon graduation, these students will enter KAUST as master's degree students and complete their graduate studies on a fully funded scholarship. *What does the KAUST Discovery Scholarship provide to awardees?* If awarded the KAUST Discovery Scholarship, KAUST will provide the following benefits listed below. - For the remainder of your undergraduate degree program of study, you will receive: - Full tuition to complete your undergraduate degree at your current institution - A living stipend based on your current city and country of residence - An allowance to purchase text books - An allowance to purchase a laptop - All economy class travel costs associated with your participation in KAUST-sponsored enrichment activities throughout the remainder of your undergraduate degree program. In particular, travel associated with the following activities: - Scholarship award ceremony event - Global workshop at the KAUST campus in Saudi Arabia - Regional leadership workshop - Upon the completion of your undergraduate degree program, you will receive: - Admission into a master's degree program at the KAUST campus in Saudi Arabia - A full scholarship at KAUST, including tuition, housing and travel costs *What is the application process?* Applicants must complete a secure, on-line application and are required to submit the following information: - Personal data - Three (3) letters of reference addressing the academic, leadership and research abilities of the applicant - Statement of Purpose - Personal statement - Official academic transcript(s) - TOEFL or IELTS score *What is the applicant selection process?* Applications are judged on merit in an open and independent review conducted by a selection panel composed of international education experts and premier global research faculty from around the world. Selection panels will recommend finalists to KAUST officials who will endorse the final selection. Selected undergraduate institutions will also nominate outstanding students for the scholarship, some of whom will be offered KAUST Discovery Scholarships. *What is the selection timeline?* *The deadline is November 9, 2007.* KAUST will select the first recipients of the KAUST Discovery Scholarship by the end of 2007. *How do I know if I am eligible to apply?* All applicants must demonstrate proven leadership in research and academic involvement. At a minimum you must have the following academic qualifications: - Official university record documenting academic achievement at the highest level - Current enrollment in an undergraduate program in a KAUST-related field of study - 550 TOEFL PBT or 213 TOEFL CBT, 79-80 iBT, or 6.0 on the IELTS for non-native English speakers - Proven research interest and/or leadership potential - Ability to enter a master's program at KAUST in September 2009, or after *What are the requirements of the Discovery Scholarship? * - Agreement to matriculate at KAUST following graduation from your undergraduate institution** - Participation in KAUST-sponsored enrichment activities that include an award ceremony, workshop in home region, and a conference in Saudi Arabia ** - Obtaining necessary documents for travel outside of the your home country (KAUST will assist with travel documents for entrance into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) - Maintenance of the highest academic standards and results at your current undergraduate institution through graduation - Return of the signed copy of the KAUST Discovery Scholarship Terms and Conditions upon acceptance - Copies of the first three (3) pages of your international travel documents which should include your photograph, birth date, location of birth, and expiration date of your travel documents *What happens if I do not comply with the requirements of the Scholarship?* The KAUST Discovery Scholarship is extremely competitive. KAUST expects all selected students to comply with the conditions of the Discovery Scholarship. If it is determined that the scholarship recipient is not meeting the requirements of the scholarship as defined in the KAUST Discovery Scholarship Terms and Conditions document, the scholarship recipient will be expected to reimburse KAUST for all scholarship funds paid to the recipient. *Is it possible to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) instead of the TOEFL?* Yes. While the TOEFL test exam scores are preferred, you may submit IELTS scores. *Am I required to submit a GRE test score?* No, you are not required to submit a GRE score. You are required to submit official university documents of your academic achievement and a TOEFL score (if a non-native English speaker). *If I cannot apply by the current application deadline, is it possible to apply at another time? * Yes. There will be two applications cycles per year. If you cannot complete all requirements of the application at the current time, please submit your application for the second application cycle, which begins in early December 2007. *Who should I contact during the application process?* If you have any questions during the application process, you can contact the KAUST Scholarship Office via e-mail at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] *How can I obtain the required official travel documents to travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia?* If you do not already have official travel documents from your country of residence, we encourage you to obtain them as soon as possible. You will need to obtain a visa to travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the annual KAUST Discovery Scholarship Global Conference and when you start your degree program of study. KAUST will assist you in obtaining travel documents to enter the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To obtain instructions on the visa application process, please refer to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Embassy or consulate in your country. If you already have travel documents, please check to make sure that they are valid. You are responsible for paying the costs of obtaining your travel documents. KAUST will not accept applications after this deadline. It is highly recommend that you submit your application well in advance of November 9, 2007, to ensure that you do not miss the deadline as a result of technical difficulties with either your own equipment/network or as a result of heavy traffic on the KAUST Online Application Web site. *2.
