Quake shakes Indonesian capital Map A 6.1-magnitude earthquake has struck the Indonesian island of Java, causing buildings to sway in the capital, Jakarta, officials have said. The epicentre was located 180km (115 miles) west of the city, in the Sunda Strait, at a depth of 50.6 km (31.4 miles), the US Geological Survey said. There have so far been no reports of any damage or casualties. A more powerful 7.6-magnitude quake devastated western Sumatra last month and left more than 1,100 people dead. An official at the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, Suharjono, told the AFP news agency that Friday's tremor was the result of movement in the same tectonic plate, but that it was impossible to say whether the two events were related. "However, the epicentres are in the same bloc... due to a clash between the Indo-Australian and Euro-Asian plates," he said. Suharjono said the quake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami. Indonesia sits on the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", one of the most active areas for earthquakes and volcanic activity in the world. --- In rantau...@yahoogroups.com, "sjamsir_sjarif" <hamboc...@...> wrote: > > > Dari sumber USGS > http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2009mva4.php > MaNgah baco: > > > Earthquake Details > Magnitude 6.1 > Date-Time > > * Friday, October 16, 2009 at 09:52:52 UTC > * Friday, October 16, 2009 at 04:52:52 PM at epicenter > * Time of Earthquake in other Time Zones > > Location 6.613°S, 105.182°E > Depth 50.6 km (31.4 miles) > Region SUNDA STRAIT, INDONESIA > Distances 125 km (80 miles) S of T.-Telukbetung, Sumatra, Indonesia > 180 km (115 miles) WSW of JAKARTA, Java, Indonesia > 185 km (115 miles) W of Sukabumi, Java, Indonesia > 265 km (165 miles) W of Bandung, Java, Indonesia > Location Uncertainty horizontal +/- 6.3 km (3.9 miles); depth +/- 8.8 km > (5.5 miles) > Parameters NST=225, Nph=225, Dmin=346.4 km, Rmss=1.13 sec, Gp= 29°, > M-type=teleseismic moment magnitude (Mw), Version=9 > Source > > * USGS NEIC (WDCS-D) > > Event ID us2009mva4 > > * This event has been reviewed by a seismologist. > > > --- In rantau...@yahoogroups.com, "sjamsir_sjarif" <hambociek@> wrote: > > > > > > Dari sumber MakNgah baco: > > > > http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gCeFe6qrUA2J6TpqBUjMoyp8nthAD9BC4NR00 > > Strong earthquake rocks western Indonesia --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ .
