But what about the gradients, the can serve some artistic purposes and
give control.

As Anders Brander said, we have no plans to do things like that - RS
doesn't have any way of manipulating (painting, making gradients or
like) the image besides the standard controls that are applied to the
entire image and my guess is that this requires quite a lot of work
(gui) to make it work...
