Nicky: I had already suggested that, but he wasn't sure if checking if a
column is either 0 or 1 is faster than whether null or not null. He also
thought of a computed column that would assign 0 or 1 if the date was filled
in, but again he wasn't sure if it was faster

Doug,
Sorry I missed the datatype of your LabelsPrintedDTS col. yesterday (hat tip,
Karen)!
I may be flogging a dead horse here but might you not simply add an integer
column with a default value of 0 and update it to 1 after you print? So now you
would use ... WHERE checkcolname = 0 for your selection.

But you're missing Doug's problem, Dan. In order to populate the temp table,
he would have to say "where Datecol is null", because those are the records
that haven't been printed yet. And Doug is saying that the "is null" is really
slow

For my warehouse team, i create a temp table, open a form, and they double
click or type in the part#s they want to print. Then the labels print based on
the temp table.
No extra columns for your permanent tables and super fast.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Re: [RBASE-L] - Speeding up SELECT WHERE ColName IS NULL
That would work, Buddy. Remember this column is not indexed, so the questions
becomes:
What SELECTs multiple rows faster - a specific value or a null value?
Which is what Nicky's approach was asking.

What I have done in the past was set the default value to some off the date
like 12/31/1899 then print your labels where the date = 12/31/1899

Doug, when you create a new order, had you tried assigning a default value of
0 to LabelsPrintedDTS rather than no value? Once printed, you can change it to
1. This way you search on ... WHERE LabelsPrintedDTS = 0 rather than NULL.
