I tried you example and get the error if I do something like this

where shippingdate = '.vmindate'

try taking the ' ' off the code.

Now as far as 7.1 I am in the same boat you are. How ever I went and got 
my own copy and start learning on my own. If you have not done so, do it 
so that when your company does switch your ready. There is enough of a 
learning curve that if you just get "thown in it" you may get lost.
