This sounds very familiar to me as being connected to the path issues as well.  
My suggestion is to CD into the directory that contains your database files.  
The path is set to be able to find the Rbase program and help files.  Start up 
RBase and you should be able to connect to the database.  Good luck.

Nope - I connected the database, typed CD \RBDOS61a, typed FORMS and I'm 
kicked out.

Only possible hint is that when I'm in the menu and select VIEWS / CREATE 
MODIFY it says it can't find the help files.

I may try reinstalling from the old Microrim CD I have
