We recently upgraded to 8.0. Had Razzak on-hand.
Actually, I had fun seeing a very critical and complex 7.6 LAN/R:WEB
application
transformed into R:BASE Turbo V-8, R:Compiler 8.0, along with Oterro
8.0. Not to
mention the first live mobile (Wireless/Blue Tooth) R:BASE Turbo V-8
application
on a Samsung Ultra Q1 touch screen XP device, to be implemented on
thirteen (13)
mobile stations.
The major issues we had were make sure your database is healthy. Mine had a
couple of issues. I could not do a pack. I could do a reload (which is what
we do for backups). There was something wrong with a view of something that
would find a premature end of data so it would abort on a table load and
continue on like nothing happened except there was now a whole lot of missing
data. So if you can do an unload all to a file and have the database recreate
itself by running that file with NO ERRORS then your database is
healthy enough
to move up to 8.0.
Very true!
01. Do all your homework up front
02. Resolve all data integrity issues
03. Predefine all global variables, if used in VIEWS
04. Cross-Reference and verify all PKs, FKs, UKs, and Indexes
05. Verify all CHAR settings, especially the IDQUOTES
06. Use the latest update of Turbo V-8 (8.0.17.3.30321 or higher) to start with
07. Always keep all PLUGINs, if used, in .EXE folder
08. Customize/Update RBENGINE8.CFG to match your prior working
version of R:BASE
09. Take advantage of Form Custom Actions, Form/Report/Label Custom EEPs
01. If you can UNLOAD/LOAD and build a clean database, you are good to go
Last but not least, keep a very positive attitude! Things will be
much smoother.
Very Best R:egards,
Razzak.
