John I think you may have solved my problem. I followed what you said and
disconnected one computer and whamo the other computer worked fine, then
reversed it and slowwww. I did several repeats and was watching the network
monitor and after about the third try the suspect computer went to zero and I
cannot even get the program to boot. It does not appear to be the switch
because I also replaced it with a router(both are new) and had the same
results. Also replaced the cable, no help. Will stop by tomorrow to get a new
network card and hope for the best. I want to say that this Rbase list is the
best place for help. I had surfed the internet to no avail. Like I had said
in my previous post I new it was not Rbase because I use the same App at
another business with 4 computers and have had no problems. I will reply after
new card installed.
Thanks Tom Hart

Subject: [RBASE-L] - RE: Network issue

Tom, I have several clients on a peer-to-peer running a 7.5 compiled version
with very good results. Two of the clients have the max of 10 PCs on the
network. If you have a peer-to-peer network you should have a PC that is used
exclusively as a pseudo file server. Put the database files on the server PC
and the RBASE exe, dll etc files should be on the individual workstations so
that you don’t have to pull the RBASE program across the network every time you
load RBASE.

There are a lot of possible causes but here are a few things that I would do:
If you suspect hardware, I would start by shrinking the network to two PCs
(power off the 3rd one and disconnect it from the switch) to isolate the
problem. A bad NIC or cable can pull the entire network down.
I have seen virus checkers cause slowdown issues. Temporarily disable the
firewall and virus checker.
Press ctrl/alt/del to access the task manager. It has a networking tab that
will give you a graphical view of your network performance. View it from the
PC that contains your database files.

John

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Network issue

I have a network issue that I can't seem to resolve, so if anyone can help,
please do. I have 3 computers networked thru a switch running a compiled app
in 7.5 On the master computer the program runs fine, but on the 2 workstations
when I try to load the program sometimes it will not load other times it will.
Sometimes when I try to load it once it won't, until I try to load again, then
both sessions load. When they do load, they are very, very slow. I had done a
google search and found that if I changed my settings on each network adapter
to 100 full duplex(from autonegotiate), that initally it made a remarkable
difference, but suddenly stopped and went back to being slowwwwwww. I have
even moved the app from computer to computer and sometimes that makes a
difference, for awhile. All three computers are brand new. To futher
complicate things I run the same app on 4 computers at another location and
have never had a problem. I am pulling out
 what little hair I have.
