Bill, here is an example of an Alter column command I used in a recent sql 
script. I didn't add the message or the not null qualifiers in my example, but 
it should be syntaticalloy correct:

ALTER TABLE tbl_family ALTER familyhomephone TEXT(10) not null ('Your message 
here')
