Thanks for everyone's input.  To summarize :

I tried AdAware, SpyBot,ComboFix,Malwarebytes,AVG,Dr.Web and Vipre.

(Uninstalling each program so that only one detection program was active at a
time.)

I ran all in regular mode and in Safe Mode.

SpyBot and Combofix reported finding the rootkit and reported removing it,

but did not actually do so.  All other packages reported a clean system.

I removed the drive and ran some of the above packages on it from another

clean PC via an external USB chasis.  Oddly enough, Dr. Web reported

ComboFix installer as being infected!  In any case, as with the first go
around,

after reporting it cleaned, the drive was not.  It is odd that the software
would

report a file deleted, but find it again when running it a second time.  And
this

with the drive not being bootable!

I have read a few articles on root kits and  they are in a different ballpark

than most malware programs.  Many articles saying formatting is the only safe

option.

In any case, the format took care of it.

Thanks again all.
