I played around with the PDF example in HELP which just happens to use 40
parameters. With Compression Off, the PDF size of the 15 pager is 1,515KB.
With Compression On and MaxCompression On, it drops to 799KB. But when I
turn Embed_Used_Fonts Off, that 799KB size dropped to 55KB, which is as
small as Acrobat could get it. Even with Compression set to Off, Embed_
Used_Fonts Off dropped the original 1,515 size to 189KB. It seems Embed
has a large 'cost' to its use. I can sure pack more 55KB PDFs than 799KB
PDFs on a hard drive.
The files without Embed work just fine with several viewers, so I simply
turn it Off even though I am not really clear on what Embedding does. The
report uses only one font with multiple sizes and bold.
Tom,
Did you know that you have answered your own question?
Technically, if you are using "common" fonts in your reports or labels,
you don't have to worry about displaying the same report or label as
PDF. Every typical installation of XP, Vista, or Windows 7 include all
necessary fonts.
However, for some reason, if you using special/custom fonts in your
report or label, you MUST use the added OPTION to include fonts. This
will allow your PDF report or label to be displayed accordingly with
your special/custom fonts, etc. Of course, this will add a little
weight to the size of the final PDF document.
Are there other parameters or combinations of parameter that come
with a size or speed cost? Using 5/15 V8.
Yes, there is one more ...
Using the current versions of R:BASE 7.x and V8, any Rich Text Object
in Report or Label, when printed as PDF, is saved as "Image of RTF"
and not the actual RTF. Thus, you cannot highlight nor copy the content
when viewing in PDF viewer. However, this option is ENHANCED in R:BASE
eXtreme 9.0. All RTF and Enhanced RTF controls are saved as readable
text and you can highlight, copy and paste PDF content, if you wish.
You will also notice the decreased size of all PDF output options.
Very Best R:egards,
Razzak.
