Bummer.... VPNs and file-server database do not mix. Same would happen if you were using Access, Filemaker, any non-client-server database. Performance is bad because the entire database has to be sent back and forth over your IP connection. We've had this discussion a few times on this forum, the last time it was asked by me because one of my biggest clients complains that they simply cannot work from home over their company's VPN.
