Hi Tony,

That is all well and good, but what if someone is away from their computer with
it still operating – under your situation anyone passing could access the
application.

Regards

Hi Jennifer,

Probably you will have used this feature already, if not it might be helpful.

I always make use of the (CVAL(‘USERID’))

The value is the windows userid and unique in the network.

Based upon this value you are able to look up the employee details in the
employee table and if available he/she will have access to your application.

One of the columns in the employee table is the department to which he/she
belongs.

The nice thing about this solution is that you don’t need any login screens and
nobody is able to login using a name / password of another person.

Hope it helps

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Trigger or Rule or something else?

Hello,

I have a form with a scrolling region displaying items listed by department. I
want the users to be able to see all the items but only approve/edit those
items that are listed with their department number. I have the security set up
so that the application will know who the user is and their department – but
how do I prevent them from approving or updating items that aren’t in their
department? Should I use a before update trigger or a rule, or would there be
a better way to handle this?

Thank you,

Jennifer Roberts
