I am using CCleaner to clear them out. Just sympathizing. I'm observing a behavior that I'm trying to nail down. I'm noticing that the $$$ files do not always clear out, even when exiting R:BASE normally. For instance, when you start R:BASE you normally get 3 $$$ in the temp folder. Shut down your session and the 3 $$$ disappear.
