I do periodically get the I/O error messages about the disk being full
when in reality it is not.

While scrolling through my threads from two years back I noticed this
answer to a similar question shown below.

your R:BASE 7.6 for Windows SCRATCH settings and modify your
"Environment Variables" under Advanced System Settings to include
C:\Temp to store large scratch files for R:BASE. Make sure to keep the
default setting "SCRATCH TMP" in RBEngine76.cfg file placed under
C:\Windows.

There are 2 "Environment Variables" for User and 2 "System Variables".

Change those variables to "C:\Temp", as illustrated below:

And, then make sure that you have created a folder C:\Temp

When I look in my Configuration settings (I have 7.6) I see the SCRATCH
settings in the Miscellaneous tab.

There are four possible choices; On, Off, and TMP then one for User
defined.

I do not see either advanced system settings (unless that is what I am
looking at) nor do I see anything about Environment Variables.

To store the large scratch files, which setting should I use?

I do have a file C:\TEMP
