Bob, Have you considered using the Microsoft "TEXT" ODBC driver to define your file. Once you have defined and activated the connection you mere have to do SET VAR ReceiveVarName TEXT SELECT odbcVarName INTO ReceiveVarName INDICATOR indcvar FROM odbctablenam WHERE COUNT=1
