Try using a date picker with no format instead.
Make sure your DATE FORMAT setting is MM/DD/YYYY
This will make the date display in the form you want without getting in your 
way like the filed format does.

Delete on the date picker will null the date

I changed it and now when I delete the numbers out of the field or hit the 
delete key it shows 12/30/1899 as the date. Strange.
