I received a free HP laptop in the $550.00 range that I use constantly
remotely.

If I were to do the buying I would not have purchased this particular
laptop.

It runs hot and the fan is on most of the time.

The value is 3.9 out of 7.9 so it is average.

The battery last on hour at the most so I seldom use it on DC.

Since I have had it over a year now, I can't complain because it still
runs well.

I doubt it will last as long as the Gateway I had that lasted seven
years.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A665 off the shelf at Staples. Win 7 Pro with
Intel I3. Easy to read screen. No noise, virtually no heat on a table or
on your lap. Probably should have gone with I5 but there has been no
performance problems. It actually works better than some desktops at
work. I occasionally have the desktops lock up when creating forms with
many items on it. The laptop has never locked. I looked the cheap
laptops at Best Buy with my son who wanted a smaller version. We ended
up about the $600 range for another Toshiba only because it fit easily
in his backpack. It had all the stuff the other people were recommending
but had 6 meg memory. A local company is buying their reps Asus
netbooks. Do not know the model. They look about 12" by 8". Comes with
Win7 Pro. Graphics look fine and speed pretty good. These people really
like them. Just a simple keyboard, readable screen, I think 4 mg memory.
They literally fit into a small case. Cost is about $700.

I really need to think of retiring my Toshiba Tecra and get
a new laptop this year. Need to move up to Windows 7
just as they're ready to push out Windows 8 (I'm always a few
steps behind...)

I'm not asking for recommendations, although part of me wonders
if the $399 deals at Best Buy are good enough for me, but for a
specific feature. On this laptop, when I have a big RBase windows
(7.6 or 9.1) form open in the designer, after a while the CPU usage
doubles, the fan starts whirling, and it sounds like my laptop is going
to fly off the desk. If I have 2 forms open, then I expect an
explosion.
I've learned to live with closing and opening forms repeatedly to give
my computer a rest, but it sure would be nice not to have my computer
freak out. Not sure if this happens just to me...

What particular component of hardware would affect this, so I can make
sure I get a better grade of whatever to allow me to have several forms
open in RBase? Is it the amount of memory, the CPU speed, something
graphics??
