You are a genius! So how do I do this without touching the Y ? Can I do something in the rbase.cfg file? One more ancillary question...some of the texts I have a character that looks like a small case cursive f. How do I find out what ANSI/ASCII character it is so I can get rid of it? Mike

It should be: SRPL(columnname,' ',.vHARDBLANK,0) Secondly, CHAR(255) is a hard blank in the ASCII character set. In the ANSI character set it is ΓΏ (y with umlaut). Y with umlaut is equivalent to y in a SRPL, so that explains why your y's are being replaced!
