I think what I really am looking for is a Varialble Lookup Treeview. The variable look-up controls are extremely developer friendly because just changing the value of the control variable changes the selected item in the control.
Also, with variable lookup controls there is no hidden interactions as there are with DB controls. This translates into far less development time because they work as you expect the first time. I'll put in an enhancement request.
