Dear R:BASE Community,
Barcodes have been an integral part of R:BASE for many years. With the release
of R:BASE X (Version 10), new barcodes were added to the Report/Label Designer
so warehouse and automation applications may leverage this technology to
further
streamline production.
The Report and Label Designer 2D Barcodes controls now include "QR Code" and
"DataMatrix" barcodes.
The QR Code has become popular outside the automotive industry due to its fast
readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC bar codes.
Applications include product tracking, item identification, time tracking,
document management, general marketing, and more. QR Codes have become
common in
consumer advertising. Typically, a smartphone is used as a QR Code scanner,
displaying the code and converting it to useful data.
The DataMatrix barcode is most popular for marking small items, due to the
code's
ability to encode fifty characters in a symbol that is readable at small sizes.
Being scalable, with commercial applications as small as 300 micrometers and as
large as a 1 meter (3 ft) square, DataMatrix is used on a broader scale with
shipping carriers.
Included within Report and Label Designer Barcode controls is the
IntelligentMail
barcode for use on mail sent within the United States. The barcode is
intended to
provide greater information and functionality than its predecessors.
IntelligentMail
is a height-modulated barcode that encodes up to 31 decimal digits of
mail-piece
data into 65 vertical bars, and contains a tracker portion.
