Following is in addition to Mike Young's advice of using 
NULL. 

To INSERT, LOAD or UNLOAD, i.e., to load or transfer rows 
accurately when using one of above commands, first set 
NULL to a unique string such as -0-. 

If the NULL symbol is SET to blank, for example, and 
you load values that have leading blanks, R:BASE might 
misinterpret the values as null because the leading 
blanks match the null symbol.
