Daniel,
I am no expert on this subject but I have succeeded
in doing at least some of what you are asking about.
Here at Hotchkiss we don't like NT so one of my
first concerns was using it at all. Oterro requires NT so
I discussed it with my web guys and they agreed to try it
in order for us to continue to use R:BASE as our
centralized database. R:Base has worked extremly well for
us over the years but with the advent of the web and the
need to provide a web interface to our databases we needed
a solution. Razzak told us that Oterro was the answer. He
told us that Oterro would do the trick for us and to try
it.
My web guys were currently using PHP and of course
were sceptical since they didn't know a thing about R:Tango
and quite frankly probably didn't want to have to learn it.
Also, they were no fans of IIS.
At any rate I had Razzak and his fellows put
together and configure an NT server at his shop and ship it
to us for testing. To make a long story short, we were
able to eliminate having to use IIS (which we knew we
didn't like to begin with) and only use the NT box for
Oterro as a gateway to the R:Base database. We are able to
use a bridge product that allows us to use Apache web
server and PHP to develop web content.
So what we have is an R:BASE database running on a
Novell server being impacted by calls from PHP through
oterro to an Apache Web server. It can be done and it
works. There was a posting I put on this list serv a
couple of months ago written by my web guy that expains the
process and the materials needed. If you are interested I
will try and dig it up.
By eliminating IIS on the NT box we were able to
hit the Apache server with 100 simultaneous calling for a
table of over 500 records hits with very good speed.
Speed that was acceptable even to the web guys. I truly
beleive that IIS needs to be elimated from the mix.
Although this hasn't been put on line yet, the
initial tests we have run on this rig look very very
promising. R:BASE is truly a GREAT product. Good Luck.
