First off, although I'm sure it's not the cause of
your problem, I think the correct syntax for the load
command should be:

LOAD cheques FROM &vFile AS ASCII

Is it possible that the file you were loading from
when the process failed was corrupted at the end -- in
particular, could it have been missing the CTRL-Z end
of file marker?  That might lead R:Base to continue
past the end of the file and try to load whatever
garbage it found on the disk -- stuff that probably
couldn't be resolved into the correct data types and
would therefore appear as NULLs in the database.
