No, not easy, although I do use this for things like charge lists.  I think
you mean up and down like a telephone book.  I found a routine in an old
rbase exchange and have been using it ever since.  It works ok in dos but I
haven't tried it in windows - you would have to use a monospace font
probably.  This routine creates variables and then places  the 2 or 3
columns on one line.  I will send you the code  if you wish, and you can
modify it.  It takes a little experimentation, but once you get it it's
good for YEARS.

I have put this request in RDCC, and wish others would ask for this feature
also.  Maybe it can be placed in the next version or even a patch.  I
suspect it would be a separate report section like header or footer --
maybe "snake section" <g>  - for snaking columns (this I believe is the
term for this feature).

Let me know.  I will at least look up the old exchange and see if I can
find the original code.
