Always look at the ports being hit and compare them to ports that shouldn't
be accessed (3,21,23,80,139) among others on the client side. If they're
high number ports that you can't match to a service port, it's probably just
errant traffic. Also know the source IP. I get hit all the time from my
provider who's doing status tests on their network.
A DoS attack would be accompanied by repeated hits and a personal "firewall"
package would just succumb to the attach itself.

Eric

Subject: Off Topic- Zone Alarm Alerts
G'day,
I normally experience about 10 Zone Alarm alerts a day from someone
trying to access my IP address. Since I rebooted yesterday I have
received 399 attempted accesses, and from a variety of addresses.
Dunno what's going down, whether or not it is misreporting or if the bad
guys have released something but just thought I'd mention to my mates,
"If you are not running some form of security gate you are a clay pigeon."
Head for www.zonealarm.com with all speed.
Warmest regards,
Tom Grimshaw
