Hello Jim,
I am guessing here but I think it may well be changed in the upcoming
version. It is going to be more like Visual Basic and we will have much more
control over the Controls. Until then you will have to work with the
suggestions given. If you can make the Developer Conference in October you
will get an eyeful of what the upcoming version will have in store. We saw
some of it at the 2000 Conference and it looks very nice. I, like everyone
else, want to be able to do more trick stuff and blow out the limits but it
requires a major rewrite of the code for R:Base to do this and that is what
they are working on. Until then we just have to hold our horses.
If it is something you must have now then I would suggest using VB and
Oterro. That is a more expensive solution and it will increase your
development time significantly. I also have some concerns about VB.
Microsoft is taking it in new directions which will further increase the learning
curve. In fact, it looks to me like you would be fool to learn VB at this point
and you might as well learn Java, or C# as Microsoft calls their version, or
jump straight to Visual C. Now we are talking a serious learning curve.
Another possible ringer is their licensing policies. They are getting scary. We
may soon have to relicense their products every year whether we like it or
not.
Linux is looking better all the time and we will one day have R:Base for
Linux. There are people on this list running R:Base on Linux right now. I
have decided to wait for the next R:Base version because I like R:Base.
RBTI has shown a committment to develop an excellent product and squash
bugs so I have faith they will do it right. Microsoft has shown it wants to own
the desktop. Bugs get fixed but slowly and they often introduce more new
ones then they fix. Microsoft wants us to do our computing THEIR WAY.
But you can do it any way you want. I am doing R:Base MY WAY for now
including some workarounds for things I want to happen.
Best regards,
Mike Young
