and 'word and file') but mywordfile.doc (will open)
(no spaces anywhere) Is this normal? Can spaces be

Try:
LAUNCH 'my word
file.doc'
OR
LAUNCH 'C:\My Documents\my word file.doc'
.
Notice the QUOTES around the file name.
. Make sure to use the database
default QUOTES SETtings
