Wouldn't R:BASE's SSUB do the job for you?

SET VAR x = 'Salisbury, Scott'
SET VAR y = (SSUB(.x,1))

The value of "y" is "Salisbury" now.

Had I used (SSUB(.x,2)) the value of "y" would
have been "Scott".
