Thanks for everyone's advice. They are on a hub, not a switch, so I told them about this option. When I did the upgrade I made the following 2 changes: (1) saved scratch to a local drive, and (2) excluded the .rb* files from Norton's list.
There was a noticeable increase in speed immediately. We'll revisit network hardware issues in a few weeks. Thanks again!
