Buddy:

I copied and pasted your command to my system and just changed the reference
table name and got

LOANSFORM 919888 2-22-02 11:14a LOANSFORMEAND.DAT

Hmmmm.

I noticed this behavior after I started using Acrobat Distiller. This
product allows you to output R:Base reports directly to a PDF file. It
works really well. I noticed, though, that long file names didn't show the
.pdf extension. I thought this might be something peculiar to the Distiller
software but apparently it's not.

I tried another test with an Excel file. The file name was CSR TOOL.XLS.
Prior to trying this test the file appeared at the R> as CSRTOO~1.XLS. I
opened the file in Excel and then turned right around and saved it. It now
appears at the R> simply as CSR. It does not show any of the rest of the
file name. I can still open it in Excel as CSR TOOL.XLS however.

I just tried the same test as earlier on another Win2000 machine and it
worked correctly. It is something that has been changed on my Win2000
machine specifically. Does anyone know what operating system files control
the display of file names in R:Base? Something has changed but I don't know
what. Note that there is no problem with regular 8.3 file names.

This is a real puzzler.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks -- Mike

Mike
  I just tried it using R:Base 6.5++ (latest version) on a Win2000 SP2

   OUT LOANSFORMEAND.DAT
UNLOAD DATA FOR LOANS AS ASCII
   OUT TERM

   LOANSF~1 DAT 1562747 2-22-02 10:46am LOANSFORMEAND.DAT

Subject: Long file names in Win2000 vs. WinNT

I have just discovered a difference in the way R:Base 6.5++ (latest version)
handles long file names in Win2000 vs. WinNT 4.0.

If I enter the commands in Win2000:

OUTPUT REJECTIONDATA.DAT (13.3 file name)
--
UNLOAD DATA FOR transfer AS ASCII
--
OUTPUT SCREEN

and then do a DIR command at the R> I get

REJECTION 1101562 2-22-02 10:24a REJECTIONDATA.DAT

Note that there is no tilde (~) in the first column of the directory output
as there used to be -- indicating a long file name. I cannot manipulate the
file name or delete the file at the R>. I have to do it through Explorer.

However, if I enter the commands in WinNT 4.0:

OUTPUT REJECTIONDATA.DAT (13.3 file name)
--
UNLOAD DATA FOR transfer AS ASCII
--
OUTPUT SCREEN

and then do a DIR command at the R> I get

REJECT~1.DAT 1101562 2-22-02 10:24a REJECTIONDATA.DAT

This is the correct output. I can manipulate this file as far as renaming
it or deleting it.

Has anyone else seen this behavior running R:Base under Win2000? Is there a
workaround or is there some environment setting either in R:Base or Win2000
that will effect this behavior? Any help is appreciated.
