I just had to share. A couple of weeks ago I posted a question about an issue I was having with file names in R:Base. For some strange reason long file names stopped showing up with their 8.3 abbreviation in R:Base. Yesterday I got an e-mail from TechRepublic advertising a new PC Troubleshooter book they have out. As part of the offer they provided a link to an excerpt from the book. Hoping to pick up some little nugget of information I scanned through the excerpt and lo and behold found the answer to my problem. There is a registry key that determines whether NTFS keeps a list of long file names and their associated 8.3 file names. Setting this value to 1 disables this feature and setting it to 0 enables it. My system had been set to 1. The key is something like NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation. I set the value back to 0 and now my problem is resolved.
I'm running Windows 2000 and I'm not sure if this is specific to Win2K or also to WinNT. Anyway, I was tickled to death that this very unexpected answer just fell right into my lap! Also, thanks to those who offered suggestions.
