Alastair and Mike,

"2" and "#2" do not refer to the same item when used in a
sort clause.  "2" refers to the second item in the select
statement.  "#2" is an alias and refers to the second column
of the table used in the select statement.

by way of information I "order by 2" do not work in rbase
dos ver 6.5+.  "order by 2,1" does work however.

you can also do:
select Full_Name, (slen(Full_Name)) as l_name from  + All_Names
 order by l_name,1
