Bernie - It's not "smart" - it's the voice of experience. I once ate $1,600 on a client project because there were legitimate duplicate records in a table and I couldn't figure out why when I did EITHER select statement, all the records showed up properly, but when I unioned them the dups were missing. And I was too bull-headed to look up the SELECT ... UNION syntax ... For a couple of days I just kept trying different things and adding columns of numbers and so on ...
