Not a high-speed dot matrix, this is a 12ppm Okidata laser printer.
Sorry, should have mentioned the word 'laser'.

I got a private email from a helpful person who said maybe it was
as simple as the laser running too hot!  This would explain why it
stops after the first 400 and then when they try to immediately rerun
they get maybe 300, then maybe 100, you get the idea.  The laser is
tucked in a corner, surrounded by file cabinets and other lasers.
We're going to move it out from the wall, direct a fan at it, and
see what happens!  I like these non-tech solutions!
