Specifically, can the underscore character be used in naming columns?

Mike,
There is no problem using the underscore character at all. It looks like your
database has been upgraded/converted from 2.11. The CONVEX (Convert Express)
utility forces underscore for all reserved words. In your case RDATE is the reserved
word and adding the underscore character is the ONLY way to avoid it.
Personally, I avoid using the underscore character. I would suggest to use the
normal naming convention.
Example:
Last_Name should be LastName
Address_Line_1 should be AddressLine1
Cust_City should be CustCity and so on ...
