I think that the queation that you are asking really is:

Will R:Base work on a IPX or a IP only network?

Many years ago (10+ years) this was an issue. 
It no longer is a problem and R:Base works fine on both types of
networks.

If memory servers me correctly it had something to do with a problem
with filelocking.
