I have not tested it, but I am sure you will want to use the Oterro 
connection.
You can connect to an R:base database w/ sconnect w/o any ODBC driver at 
all, but it is very slow.
If you need very much data, it is faster to disconnect one database, connect 
to the other one, dump the data out to a file, go back to the original 
database, connect to it and load the data in.

The Oterro database connection is just about as fast as a native R:base 
connection, but w/ Oterro you can connect to several datasources at once w/o 
any performance changes.

Now I have not tried connecting from an R:base database via Oterro to a 
second R:base database, but I have connected from an R:base database using 
other ODBC data sources and linking the tables into R:base.
