One thing to keep in mind about R:base is that it has been SQL based since
day one which was in the early 80s. The core R:base engine was written
around SQL even befroe there was a standard. Then in 89 when the SQL 89
standard came out, the changes to the core R:base syntex to comply with it
were minimal. Now there are some newer sql standards out, but no one
adhears to them 100% because there are some things in there that just aren't
practical to do.
