I like Murach's Visual Basic 6 book. (ISBN 1-890774-04-9)

The approach the authors took is of using VB as a front end for database
development.

Most of the other VB books that I have read don't take that approach.

Enjoy!

If your interested in learning VB check out http://www.freevbcode.com
They have tons of programs in various areas to learn from. They divide
them into categories and subjects as well.. It's a good source to find
things, another is http://www.karenware.com
For books a good reference is Visual Basic 6 Black Book by Steven Holzner.
It lists generally how to use particular controls and such.
There a ton of books to start learning VB from. What I would suggest for
and absolute beginner is the Dummy series book. Not implying anything, but
this is the book I started with as one of my first VB college courses..
The next series I wouldn't reccommend, but there are good ones out there.
I can't remember the exact name, but there are some that are VB for
databases,
but they tend to lean on SQL server quite a bit. If you would like some
code examples I would be happy to provide you with what I have. Keep in
mind they are heavily thrown together and under major development at
present.

Here are the instructions for Roberts viewer that he posted previously:

SET VAR xx TO (UDF('@ADPTVIEWER.dll','C:\images\abcd.*;1;1;1;1'))
Notes:
First parameter is the drivepathfilename, you can use wildcards or specific
names like c:\images\abcd.tif

Second to Fifth parameter are the Enable/Disable switches which are
separated
by semi-colons

Here is the description of the switches (0= Disabled 1=Enabled)

first 1/0 Printing Capability Enable/Disable
Second 1/0 Erase " "
Third Copy " '
Fourth Crop " "

The reason of the switches is because in a real imaging plattaform, you may
not
want the user to print, copy or erase the images so it is up to you to
check
the level of security which you may give the user.

Small tip:

Rbase is by far one of the most reliable and less prone to crazy
corruptions DB in the imaging arena and not to mention speed, but the blob
facility is not to be used for huge amounts of images (documents),

You may corrupt files in the process of constant use thru a network of
blobs
You will break the first rule of imaging containing the images inside of a
field which is part of the indexing schema
You will not make justice to one of the best tuned database in the market
today
(Rbase)
Rbase will aid you in the management of HUGE amount of data but in a
different
way, for instance right now as you read this e-mail, our in-house Rbase
application manages, display and share a whopping 31,000,000 images (yeahp
is
no typo 31 million images) but they are not stored as blobs inside the
database, otherwise the database will be in the neighborhood of 3
Terabytes.

You should take advantage of Rbase, it is (I hope I do not offend anyone)
the
best tool available to manage huge amount of data reliable and flexible as
is,
if you need help or you wish to learn more about Document Management please
do
not hesitate to either call on me or ask for further details on this
server.
(sorry to be so verbose now)

Note:
On the attached files I include some other dll's that will allow
the
viewer to see different types of images other than Tiff, JPG, GIF, ICO,
Etc.
