I have been using autonumber for almost 10 year to generate sequential work
orders (10,000-15,000 work orders per year) and I have not had any problems.
The work order number is formatted (02-XXXXX) and I have a utility that at
the end of the year resets it to the next years (03-XXXXX) or it can reset
it to the next number for the previous year.

Damian,

I would look into using autonumber on your PO number field. On my multi-user
runtime application I use it and it never fails to give the most current
accurate number assignment.
