I rarely hear mention of Tango or Witango anymore. Has it gone by the wayside and is being replaced with R:WEB Suite?
Mike (Ramsour),
That is a very good question and thanks for asking. Let me take this opportunity to clarify a few things.
As far as OUR products go, R:Tango and R:WEB Suite both provide WEB applications using R:BASE as a back-end database, and the ODBC driver Oterro 3.0.
Keeping up with today's ever-changing technology and incorporating R:BASE and R:BASE related product to provide a total solution for current needs has always been a challenge on which I thrive.
R:BASE and Oterro implemented with Tango (R:Tango) occurred back in 1998. And now, the R:WEB Suite has been the latest WEB solution to the R:BASE community. Both products have two things in common. Both products use the back-end robust database R:BASE and the ODBC driver, Oterro. Regardless of what we use or support, we sell licenses for R:BASE and Oterro to keep the lights on.
We at R:BASE Technologies MUST do everything we can to provide the solutions to existing and new developers/customers using our own products at a very reasonable cost. We have to keep up with the competitive market to provide WEB solutions. There are millions of PHP, ASP, .NET users out there who are looking into the best WEB applications with robust back-end databases, not to mention the support, forums and countless developers.
As far as R:BASE Technologies is concerned, we'll keep supporting R:Tango, R:WEB Suite, R:This and R:That as long as we can work together to support each other and make the product compatible with each other.
Personally, we have no problem partnering with any entity who is willing to make their product compatible with our product and vice versa. There has to be a mutual and respectful understanding. We shall do whatever it takes to keep our doors open. We need to sell R:BASE and Oterro. That is the bottom line.
Technically, both products are great tools to provide WEB solutions. There is a huge cost, learning curve and support difference involved.
With R:WEB Suite, you don't need to buy the Studio as well as the proprietary Server (to run as a service) to deploy your applications. Almost every ISP or WEB server will support your scripts generated as ASP, ASP.NET C#, ASP.NET VB, CFML, JSP 1.1, PHP 4.0, Perl 5.0 and Serverlets 2.2 JDK 1.3.
Here's a cool example. I created an R:WEB Suite application as a PHP 4.0 project (because I have 24 hour tech support in-house). If I want to give you that entire project and you happen to use ASP on your server, all I have to do is to open the project and generate scripts as ASP and you are happy. The same logic applies if someone else is using ColdFusion. All I have to do is generate scripts as CFML. This whole process will make our applications compatible with each other without having the proprietary server to run only one way, not including the cost, support, etc.
Here's another scenario. Anyone who is already using R:BASE 7.1 and has the Oterro 3.0 licenses (non R:Tango) only needs the R:WEB Suite's CodeCharge Studio (very specific and compatible with R:BASE 7.1 and Oterro 3.0) to get going. They don't need to spend the extra dollars to buy the entire suite.
The cost for R:WEB Suite (R:BASE 7.1, Oterro 3.0, CodeCharge Studio 2.3, for R:BASE and Sample Applications) is $1,795.00 per WEB Server License, while the cost for CodeCharge Studio 2.3 for R:BASE is only $429.00.
So, now you all have a choice. In the meantime, we'll continue to support R:Tango, R:This, and R:That as long as our developers and customers need the product.
We will do our best to provide you with the BEST solutions!
Very Best R:egards,
Razzak.
