Have you specified the indexed columns?

I was just reading a comment on the other list that talked about true client-server DBMS like oracle and SQL server.
It seems a lot of businesses are going to SQL server because it's Microsoft of course, but that is just a reality.
what I am having trouble with is this:
I can connect via ODBC to sql server from Rbase, attach to a million row table and try to do a search on some fields.  This takes hours and sometimes just bombs out and hangs.
In access the same query takes a couple minutes or less.  What can I do to try to speed up this process in R:base?  Is there any plan to get tighter access to those tables or be able to read the indexes?
The same goes for oracle.  Very time consuming reading large oracle views.
I worry about this only because with all the cool doo-dads and gizmos that R:base has to develop applications, I could have many nice front ends to data that is not warehoused in R:base.
