David,

Here's the tip of the day for you!

01. When you print the report as TXT or ETXT, as a
plain TEXT file, you need to keep in mind the
    fonts, etc.

02. To print that same report as TEXT file:

. Open the ContactsByCustomer in Report Designer
. Increase the width of ContPhone (DB Label)
    . Save the Report

03. At the R> Prompt:

    PRINT ContactsbyCustomer OPTION TXT +
    |FILENAME JUNK.TXT +
    |OPEN ON +
    |SHOW_CANCEL_DIALOG OFF

    What do you see?

Do you see the phone number truncated any more?

04. FYI, when printing any report on Screen, Printer or
even PDF, all fonts are preserved and are displayed
    accordingly.

When printing the exact same report as TEXT, you as
a developer/user need to adjust the width, etc.
    accordingly.

In reference to printing the same report as ETXT, you
need to use Report Designer|File|Print To Text File Setup...
option. In this case, you need to select File Type, Bands,
and the available controls (DB Label, Variable Label, etc.)
to print as TEXT data.

For your learning purposes, I have put together an updated
ContactsByCustomer report at:

http://www.razzak.com/SampleApplications/ContactsByCustomer.zip

Here's how to use this:

01. Simply unzip the file
02. CONNECT ConComp
03. At the R> prompt:
    INPUT ContactsByCustomer.RPT
04. At the R> prompt:
    PRINT ContactsbyCustomer OPTION TXT +
    |FILENAME JUNK.TXT +
    |OPEN ON +
    |SHOW_CANCEL_DIALOG OFF

Hope that helps you understand!

Very Best R:egards,

Razzak.
