R:base does not use memory on the server. All the processing is done on the workstations. The server just sends and receives the data.
Data transmission speed is most important. This is drive speed, network speed, processing speed. Since all the processing is done on the workstations, that is where you will get the most performance boost!! A file server performs many tasks necessary for proper operations on a network. I understand using a peer to peer workstation as a pseudo file server is a low cost option, but in reality, it's a poor one where you make so many tradeoffs, in the longer run you are just way better off installing a dedicated file server. IMHO when you reach 5 workstations, it's time to bite the bullet and buy a dedicated server. A fully equipped 5 user server running Windows Server 2003 can be had for under $5,000.00. When you consider the performance benefits, redundancy, etc. of a dedicated server I would not hesitate to go that way. Cost can even be spread out on a lease. Peer-to-peer is inefficient and more susceptible to hacking, virus infection and a poorer performer than a dedicated server.
