Just a note to all of you who gave GREAT adivse on this confounding problem.
Did all the ad-aware spybot stuff, and it was loaded, but that didn't help.
Finally contacted Dell, who suggested reloading the bios.
I am too dense to even know what the bios does, but it apparently wasn't doing it very well, and that seems to have fixed the problem.
