The problem we have in Canada is that officially we should be using DD/MM/YY(YY), but so many of us work with companies with US roots and/or divisions, and end up using dates in MM/DD/YY(YY) format. The logical, indisputable, you cannot possibly mix up the month and day is to use the YY(YY)/MM/DD format.
If you use all four digits of the year it becomes obvious what is where. 06/10/05 is ambiguous, 2005/06/10 is not. Users get used to it quite quickly. The users that appreciated it the most were payroll people who had to enter time cards. With the US standard date format, the DD is in the middle, requiring multiple keystrokes or mouse clicks to change the date up one day. With the UK standard format the DD comes first so [Del][Del]11 will change the day from the 10th to the 12th, and with the suggested format, the DD is last, making it quite easy to change the date from 2005/06/10 to 2005/06/11 using [End][BackSpace]1. 2005/05/19 to 2005/05/20 needs two backspaces. The payroll users I dealt with preferred the day last. Most of the current users prefer the calendar drop down if they are mouse oriented, the 2005/06/10 format if keyboard oriented.
